From Brigitte:

My journey began 6 years ago, I removed what needed to go to fill in with native species. My goal was planting as many keystone shrubs and trees I could fit in my already planted yard. I grow plants that will host many caterpillars so for me high value species is highly important.

Planting for specialist bees is high on my list, many times I grow my own plants that nurseries won’t necessarily carry, I am not always looking for the prettiest plant, if it offers a lot for wildlife than it’s a plant I will plant.

I did some research on Carex species and grasses. They offer so much – good for nesting, seeds for birds, and most of them are also host plants. I have more skippers since I started to plant grasses and sedges, they are very important part of a landscape.

From our webmaster: Brigitte is very modest, but you should know that she has one of the most beautiful native gardens I have seen. She’s full of information, and this is a garden you you don’t want to miss!
